Sadie Lucille Hough Smith went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 12, 2024. Born March 16, 1935 in Union County, Sadie was the oldest of 4 children born to William Dewey Hough and Johnnie Eulan Hinson Hough.
Sadie graduated from East Mecklenburg High School Class of 1953. Sadie was a member of the Future Homemakers of America (F.H.A.), Shutterbug Club, Glee Club, Dramatics Club, and Social Committee for Prom.
Sadie was the loved and adored wife of James Butler Smith for 67 years. The couple married January 30, 1954 and together they built a home and raised a family. Sadie created a loving home full of fun and adventure. With four children, she easily navigated experiences like camping in a pop-up camper in the rain with bears, making the best snow ice cream, and raising a garden to feed her family. She even had the forethought to plant 3 trees in the front yard, correctly set apart for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base, assuring the ball would be hit away from her home. She created a home that would be the gathering place for friends and neighborhood kids. Well known for her delicious made from scratch buttermilk biscuits, she always made enough for more than her family to enjoy daily.
Growing up in a time where little was much, God and family were everything to her. Truly a Proverbs 31 woman, she saved her earnings while her husband James was serving abroad during the Korean War and bought land. On the land she purchased, a home was built by her husband, her father, and father-in-law. In this home she raised her family. Sadie served alongside her husband, James, in the churches they attended throughout their lives.
Sadie was a woman of great faith, a prayer warrior, a devoted wife and mother. She was MawMaw with the stocked full cookie jar in the kitchen and clothes basket full of toys for the grandchildren. She will be missed dearly by her family.
Over the past several years, her health claimed her ability to care for herself. Just as she had taken care of her Mother, she was also taken care of by her children. The family would like to thank the incredible nurses, caregivers, and team at Hospice of Union County. Their kindness, attentiveness, and love will forever be remembered.
Sadie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James, parents, Dewey and Eulan Hough, a brother Neal Hough, a sister Edith Black, and two nephews, Ron Hough and Mark Hough. Sadie leaves behind her dear sister Christine Baucom.
Sadie is survived by her children; son Michael (Betsy), daughter Robin Mullis (Robert), daughter Janice Walters (Bryon), son Roger (Shari), seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
