On May 28, 1926, Russell Grant Lake was born in Decatur, IL, the second son of James Reed Lake and Joanne Hadley. Shortly thereafter, Joanne passed and young Russell was fostered by his mother’s sister in Centralia, IL. While on the farm in Centralia, Russell learned how to perform all the daily tasks associated with farming. He also learned how to ride horses, which he loved. Russell’s love for learning led him to complete high school in Centralia, IL and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL, after which he pursued careers in the insurance, education and vocational rehabilitation. A true patriot, Russell was a member of the Army Medical Corps during World War II where he served with distinction. While in Germany, he was injured by a sniper bullet. The injury severed his left thumb. Russell loved being involved with his children’s activities and supported them when he could. The family home became the den for Walter’s Cub Scout troop. He started a neighborhood volleyball league to help his children become acclimated to their new neighborhood. He became president of the Falcon Drum & Bugle Corp booster club because his sons were members of the corp. He became the head coach of Robyn’s softball team, leading them to a national championship. His home was often the meeting place for large family, holiday and political gatherings. On February 1, 2012 Russell Grant Lake passed from mortality to immortality to be with God. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, Richard and sons, Dwayne and Paul. He leaves the following to cherish his memory three sons, Russell of CA, Dale of OH and Walter of GA; two daughters, Lori Harris of MD and Robyn Hamilton of NC; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and innumerable cousins, nephews, nieces.
