Born in Nutley, he was the son of Rudolph and Dora (Wagner) Bartel and resided in Nutley most of his life, moving to Charlotte in 2005.
He graduated from Nutley High School in 1945 and was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired as a machinist from Westinghouse/Philips Lighting Corporation, Bloomfield, in 1985 and enjoyed his post-retirement as a Realtor and with Skyline Auto Exchange.
He is survived by his wife, Mercedes; son, Rudy; daughter, Marlene and her husband, Al; grandsons Albert and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Bartel Casey.
He was a proud lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, an avid auto racing fan, enjoyed bowling, photography, traveling, and his cars and motorcycles.
A funeral service was held at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Waxhaw, N.C. The cremation was held privately. Arrangements were made by McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill, N.C.
The family is planning a memorial service in New Jersey at a future date.
