Mr. Smith, age 78, of Charlotte, passed away on Saturday, April 26th, at home surrounded by family. He was born in Marshville, NC, on August 14, 1935, to the late John Adam Smith and Lillian Cleva (Marsh) Smith.
A 1958 graduate of North Carolina State College (NCSU) with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, he worked for Southern Bell/BellSouth until his retirement in 1995. He was also a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Roy, a longstanding member of Pineville United Methodist Church, enjoyed square dancing with the Swingin' Pines, reading, traveling with family, friends and the Golden Pines, and listening to his extensive jazz, blues, and country music collection.
Roy is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Jean Gibson Smith. They were married on Sept 21, 1963, at Hopewell Baptist Church, Davidson. Roy is also survived by two daughters, Sherri and Melanie of Charlotte; one uncle; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends on Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at the McEwen-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Pineville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Eric Lanier will officiate. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC.
