Roscoe Lindsay Jr.

ROSCOE LINDSAY JR. Brigadier General(retired) US Army made his final deployment to Heaven on Sunday, January 15, 2023. General Lindsay was known by his family and others as ROCK and his grandchildren as PaPa. Rock is survived by the LOVE of his life, his Wife: Joann Ledford Lindsay and his Daughters Janet Lynn Lindsay Grant: and her husband Jon Grant and two grandchildren, Samuel Greenwood Grant and Sarah Bell Grant...Carol Ann Lindsay Cribbs and her husband Floyd Ashton Cribbs IV and two grandchildren Lindsay Elizabeth Cribbs and Isabelle Louise Cribbs. Rock loved his family above all else. He was predeceased by his beloved parents: Roscoe Lindsay Sr. and Iris Bell Lindsay of Marion, SC.

Rock was born in Florence, SC on 29 July 1938 and lived with his parents in Marion, SC until college Graduation. Rock graduated from Marion High School in 1956. He was a Beta Club member, Student Council Member and winner of an English Award as a Junior. He was active in all youth activities at Marion Baptist church. He particularly liked the Royal Ambassador Group.

Rock was active in the Boy Scouts and as an Explorer Scout was the first in Marion, SC to earn the Scout God and Country Award. He experienced his 1st plane ride and ocean voyage with the military as an Explorer Scout. He was the 1st in his Scout District to earn the Explorer Silver Award (which at that time was equal to the Boy Scout Eagle Award.)

Rock attended and graduated from Presbyterian College on 6 June 1960. He was a member and officer of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Interfraternity Council Officer and others. He enjoyed the Baptist Student Union at PC and was President. He also served as Treasurer of the Baptist Student Union at the South Carolina State level. He was a member of the local unit of the ROTC and received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant at graduation. His degree was BS in Business Administration.

After graduation he finished Field Artillery School and Airborne School and was assigned the 4th Armored Division Artillery in Nurnberg (West Germany). He served for 3years on active duty.

On his return from active duty, he joined the US Army Reserve (4th 83th Artillery Battalion) in Charleston, SC. He was promoted to Captain and was a Battery Commander.

After training in Washington, DC he served as a Special Agent with Office of Naval Intelligence in Charleston, SC and Charlotte, NC.

Rock met Joann in Charleston and they were married on June 4, 1966 in Anderson, SC and they moved to Charlotte, NC.

After a brief tour in Charlotte, Rock and Joann moved to Winston Salem NC to attend the Wake Forest University School of Law. He was on the Honor List and Law Review and member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

Rock & Joann moved back to Charlotte in 1970 with their first child Janet.

Rock was admitted to the NC State Bar and practiced Law in Charlotte for over 20 years. He was member of NC Bar Association and Mecklenburg County Bar Association. During this time their second child Carol was born in Charlotte.

Rock joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1967 and retired in 1992. Rock loved the Field Artillery branch and was able to serve as a “RedLeg” for most of his career.

Rock commanded at Battalion level or higher his last 11 of 13 Years in the Army Guard. He commanded the 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery in Louisburg, NC and the 1st Battalion 113th Field Artillery in Charlotte, NC as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Rock then became the Commandant of the North Carolina Military Academy at Fort Bragg, NC and trained future officers and sergeants for future service and rank. He was honored with a monument and cannon in honor of his service at the Academy and was promoted to Colonel.

Rock then returned to the Field Artillery and Commander of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade in Greensboro, NC and had 3 Battalions under his command.

In 1989 Rock was given Command of the 30th Mechanized Infantry Brigade Separate in Clinton, NC. This is a unit of almost 5000 troops in North Carolina. (Artillery Battalion, 2 Infantry Battalions, Armored Battalion, Support Battalion, Headquarters Company, Engineer Company and a Cavalry Troop) Rock trained at Fort Bragg and had many deployments to Italy and Portugal part of the Brigade’s NATO to Land Forces Southern Europe in Verona Italy. He was promoted to Brigadier General. After retirement he was the Honorary Commander of the 113th Field Artillery Regiments.

Rock attended many military schools: Most notable being: Artillery Advanced Course at Fort Sill, OK. Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth Ks. US Army War College Carlisle, PA, He also was selected to attend the JFK School of Government National Security Program at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Mass.

Rock received the following Medals: NC Commendation Medal, NC Meritorious Service Medal, the NC Distinguished Service Medal, 2 US Army Achievement Medals, 2 US Army Commendation Medals, US Army Meritorious Medal and Legion of Merit. In addition, he was the 1st FA Officer to receive the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara.

Rock treasured his RedLeg brothers that he had the privilege to serve with and counts many of the soldiers as his best friends.

Rock also loved the North Carolina National Guard Association and highlights was attendance at the State Convention and National Guard Assoc of US. He was able to travel the state and country with his friends. Rock was honored to serve as the President of this 10,000 + State organization.

Rock was a member of many Military Groups.: American Legion, MOAA and many others. He belonged to the Park Road Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC and the Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC.

He was Honored on selection to the Presbyterian College ROTC Hall of Fame (only 25 selected in 90 years of unit.)

Rock enjoyed travel, history, running, and walking. He loved his family and spent many times at Litchfield Beach, SC. Blowing Rock NC was a special place for family and friends to enjoy the mountain at the Mountain Home.

A visitation will be held Friday, January 20, 2023 beginning at 12pm at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte with funeral service following at 2pm. Rock will be buried with Full Military Honors at Sharon Memorial Cemetery.
