A native of Richmond, VA, Robert received a B.S. degree from Appalachian State Teachers College where he met his first wife, Eula Maie Craig of Charlotte NC who passed in 1993. He subsequently married Ruth Kiser Hyder of Concord NC in 1994 who preceded him in death in 2022. He and Ruth divided their time between Gloucester Point, VA and Concord, NC. He spent the last 18 months of his life in Matthews, NC near his eldest son.
After receiving a D.Sc. degree from Harvard where he taught radiological hygiene, he achieved a very distinguished career in health physics and nuclear safety serving within the nuclear framework of the Department of Energy and its predecessor the Atomic Energy Commission with positions in Oak Ridge, TN; Livermore, CA; Germantown, MD; Boulder, CO, ending his career in Rockville, MD.
After his retirement, he then taught physics part time for 15 years at Rowan Cabarrus Community College. Along with being a wonderful father and caring husband, Robert was an avid sailor, photographer and steadfast Christian. Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church in Concord, NC or Bethany United Methodist Church in Gloucester Point, VA.
Robert is survived by his loving family consisting of two sons, a daughter, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren along with a step-son from his second marriage.
