Robert Lawson Ramsey, 87, beloved husband to Colleen A. Ramsey, father and granddad, went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2024. R.L. was a member of Gideons International and a long and faithful member of Carmel Baptist Church for 25 years.
R.L. began his career of over 22 years in the U.S. Air Force at 19 years old. He was awarded 39 military decorations including the Bronze Star with Valor for service against an armed Viet Cong company while in Vietnam, the Meritorious Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and Commendation Service Medal on 5 different occasions. He served as honor guard for 2 U.S. Presidents; Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Much of R.L.’s career military experience was in criminal investigation, retiring in 1977 as Security Police Superintendent.
After transferring to First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, R.L. continued to serve as associate lead usher and substitute adult teacher. He participated in more than 30 mission trips including Cuba six times, Barbados 5 times, Hong Kong, Japan, Spain and Germany, in support of Carmel Baptist Church and Worldwide Missions.
He was a member and crew chief of the NC Baptist Men’s disaster Relief Program, responding to hurricanes Katrina, Ike and Irene, as well as responding to flooding of the Pigeon River in NC where over 400 homes were damaged or destroyed.
His aggressive spirit, sweet smile and generous heart will never be forgotten.
A visitation for Robert will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at McEwen Funeral Service Inc., 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. A committal service will follow on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 12:45 PM at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S New Hope Rd, Gastonia, NC 28054.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Indian Trail; Gideons International; and the Charlotte Rescue Mission.
