Robert served his country in the United States Navy for eight years. He retired from Piedmont Natural Gas Company as a master welder after 25 years of service. He greatly enjoyed growing beautiful roses, loved all sporting events, was an avid fan of NASCAR and also a member of a Belmont bowling team.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Beulah and Barney Norton; brother, Jerry Norton; and grandson, Robert (Bo) Barefoot.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Helen Elizabeth Norton; step children, Carol (Steve) Patterson, John Blackson, Patrice (Larry) Gulledge, Elizabeth Blackson and Kathleen (Eugene) Wooten; sister, Mary Lois Lee; and brothers, Barney and David Norton.
Robert was loved by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and his loyal dog, Ginger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011 in the Chapel of St. Gabriel Catholic Church with Father Frank O’Rourke, Celebrant. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass.
