Mac was born on July 22, 1952 to the late Robert and Margie McKenzie in Lumberton, North Carolina. A great athlete and Student Body President of his high school, Mac was recruited by Coach Fisher DeBerry to play football for Wofford College and then Appalachian State University. Mac was Captain of the football team and held the NCAA record for most interceptions in a single quarter (three). Mac was featured in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Guided by his motto, "do the right thing and do things right", Mac was successful in two professional careers. He held positions of increasing responsibility in the insurance industry, specializing in surety bonds. As a second career, Mac became a custom home builder with the designation of Master Builder, winning the Gold Award in the top category of the Greensboro Parade of Homes.
Mac was a devout Christian and member of Weddington Methodist Church. He traveled to Chile, Cuba, Alaska and the Gulf Coast on mission trips with his prior church in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. He was a dedicated husband, father and friend who will be remembered for his dependability and strength of character.
Mac is survived by his wife Linda McKenzie, children Kendall McKenzie and Trent McKenzie (and his wife Keo), brother Dale McKenzie (and his wife Anne), and beloved golden retriever Daisy.
