Dr. Rozzelle was born to Richard Franklin Rozzelle, Jr. and Josephine Link Rozzelle on June 10, 1932, in Charlotte, NC. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jacqueline Dunn Rozzelle, his sons Richard F. Rozzelle IV (wife Phyllis) of Charlotte, and Rusty Rozzelle (fiancée Jane Griffith) of Mount Holly and his daughter Robbin Whitley (husband Charles) of Stanley. “Daddy Frank”, as he was affectionately known, is also survived by grandchildren Richard (Ritchie) Franklin Rozzelle V (wife Jennifer), April Rozzelle-Woolford (husband Dustin), Alexandra Franklyn Whitley and Parker Russell Whitley. Also surviving are sisters Jill Lucas of Marion, NC, and Judy Rozzelle of Los Angeles, CA. His extended family includes many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be greatly missed by his faithful dog, Beegee.
Dr. Rozzelle received his undergraduate degree in history from Belmont Abbey College, his Masters Degree from Appalachian State University and his Doctorate in Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He was a dedicated employee of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System for over 35 years, beginning his career teaching at Derita. He then served as principal for Steele Creek Elementary, Woodlawn Elementary, Allenbrook Elementary, Northwest Junior High, Myers Park High School and East Mecklenburg High School, where he retired in 1992.
Dr. Rozzelle loved basketball and in 1952 was awarded “Most Improved Player” for Belmont Abbey College by coach Humpy Wheeler, Sr. He also enjoyed golf, gardening, boating, RV’ing and reading. Dr. Rozzelle was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon, Elder and Sunday School teacher.
Dr. Rozzelle loved history and was especially proud of his family heritage in Mecklenburg and Lincoln Counties, where previous generations of Rozzelles ran a ferry crossing the Catawba River from 1814 until well into the 20th century. The road from the ferry to Charlotte, Rozzelle’s Ferry Road, honors the family name.
A memorial service for Dr. Rozzelle will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at 2 pm at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, 3413 Mt. Holly Huntersville Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation/receiving will follow the Memorial Service. The service will be officiated by Pastor TJ Thompson of Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church and Pastor Carol Clark of Unity Presbyterian Church, Denver, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Frank Rozzelle to either Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC, for the Montreat College Scholarship Fund or to Unity Presbyterian Church, Denver, NC, for their Mission Fund.
