Richard Alfred Halback passed away of natural causes at 89 years of age on Friday, July 31st, 2020, at his home of 39 years in Charlotte surrounded by many generations of loving family members. Richard is survived by Aileen, his sweetheart and caring wife of 66 years.
He is preceded in death by his father Alfred Halback, mother Jeanette Pearlstein Halback and his sister Mildred Michaels.
Richard was born on November 14, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Alfred and Jeanette. He served in the US Army for two years during the Korean War. He graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a Bachelor of Sciences Undergraduate and Master of Arts degrees in Criminal Justice in 1980. Richard retired after a 20-year New York City Police Department career starting as patrolman, spent 9 years as a Mounted Police Officer before being promoted to a Detective. Richard also taught at the New York City Police Department Academy. In 1976 he relocated the family from East Meadow (Long Island), New York to Charlotte, NC to commence his second career as a Correctional Science Program Director at Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, NC where he impacted the lives of many students for 21 years before officially retiring.
Richard Halback was a great family man and a loving father always with a listening ear, patience and providing guidance and direction. He married Aileen Roberts in 1953 and had three daughters, Denise McAllister (James), Diane McRorie (Daniel) and Doreen Donnelly (Gerald) and also a son, Richard, who died in infancy; eleven grandchildren, Kimberly McAllister, Julia Kroenke, Christopher McRorie, Chelsey Bartholet, Casey McRorie, Carly Frederick, Cassidy McRorie, Benjamin Aydt, Melanie Brost, Marissa Donnelly, Kellyann Donnelly and eight great-grandchildren with more expected in the immediate future.
Richard was a very social, active man who was deeply involved in spending time with family, church, vintage automobiles and gardening for the majority of his life. His family and friends will always remember him as someone with a gregarious extrovert, comical and generous personality and for being a loving and caring person.
To celebrate Richard’s life, a 1:00pm funeral service is scheduled for Friday, August 7th, 2020, at New City Church, formerly Church at Charlotte, located at the intersection of Carmel Road and Colony Road in Charlotte, NC. Pastor Jim Kallam, Jr., our family friend, will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life. The church will require social distancing and masks.
