Mr. Phillip Alvin Porter, 82, of Monroe, entered into rest on November 21, 2015 at his residence. A native of Pickens, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Aaron John and Mary Moseanna Melton Porter. He was the loving husband of Sharon Eudy Porter who also preceded him in death. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers.
“Porter” was a member of Post #380 of the American Legion; he was a member of the 40 and 8 Voiture 793; a Shriner, a Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He retired from the United States Navy and was a commercial carpenter.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Valas and husband Jimmy of Monroe. Four stepsons also survive him: Rick Chastain, Sr. and his wife Latricia of Albemarle; Randy Chastain of Albemarle; Ronnie Chastain and his wife Jennifer of Charlotte; and Robbie Chastain and his wife Jane, also of Albemarle. His grandchildren also survive him: Ashley Valas of Monroe; Rickey Chastain, Jr.; Kevin Chastain; and Jeremy Chastain. Four great grandchildren, Bentley, Jaylen, Ma’Kyla and Cheyenne; Five sisters; and One brother also survive him.
A funeral service with full Naval Honors will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 in the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Ronnie Chastain, his stepson, officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park. Interment will follow the funeral service on Saturday with full military rites.
