Peter J. Stewart of Charlotte passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2015, at Carolinas Medical Center at the age of 85. Born in Brooklyn, NY, July 2nd, 1930, the son of David J. Stewart & Ruth Mary Tierney, Peter was the fourth child of six. After graduating from Chaminade High School, he enrolled in Niagara University, subsequently joining the Marine Corps for three years. After serving in the Marine Corps, he then enrolled in Hofstra University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. Peter enjoyed a long and successful career in Sales, Marketing and Management, with firms including Black and Decker, Portable Electric Tools, K & E Industries, Disston Tools, and finally an Irish company called Portasol.
He was an active member of Carmel Country Club where he enjoyed his passion for the game of golf.
Peter was preceded in death by his siblings, David & Tom Stewart and Mary Ketcham.
Peter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maureen, affectionately known to all as “Maudie”; sons, Peter, Chris and Sean Stewart; daughters, Sharon Smart, Maura Stewart, Tara Thornton and Marisa Tompkins; and twelve grandchildren, Peter Stewart; Madison and McKenna Smart; Nicholas, Chloe, Madeleine and Aidan Mackey; Ryan, Kerri, and Kasey Stewart; and Jackson and Campbell Tompkins; and two sisters, Ruth Woods and Amy Martin.
Home and family defined his life, and he will be missed by all.
Visitation will be Friday, December 4th, 2015, from 6 to 8pm at the McEwen- Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Parish, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte. Father Mark S. Lawlor will be the celebrant.
