Peggy was born on October 14, 1928, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She lived all her life in Charlotte, where she met Ernie Phipps while purchasing a camera.
Peggy was the daughter of the late Annie Sykes Curtis and William Rome Curtis and the youngest of six sisters. She played the piano and helped with the children’s ministry in the church she grew up in, Belmont Park United Methodist Church. Peggy graduated from Charlotte Technical High School in 1946. After graduation, she worked for Southern Bell Telephone company for 14 years.
While working at the telephone company, she met her late husband, Ernie Phipps. They were married on February 14, 1959. They spent the next 44 years raising their four boys, helping with grandchildren, and starting a business called Ernie’s Music. For 40 years, Peggy handled the books for Ernie’s Music and for other various businesses Ernie purchased. Peggy and Ernie became Hickory Grove Baptist Church members in 1973 and began serving faithfully in the College Ministry, teaching and leading young men and women. Ernie passed away in 2004.
Throughout the years, Peggy used her gifts of hospitality and serving others. She enjoyed having people in her home and always loved cooking for them. She also served people by caring for their children at Hickory Grove in the nursery. Peggy’s greatest joy was in serving her family. She enjoyed spending time with her four boys and always had one of her grandchildren with her. She left a legacy of faithfulness to her family and many others.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, S. Ernest Phipps (Ernie); her parents, Annie Sykes Curtis and Williams Rome Curtis; and her five sisters, Lila Johnson, Reedie Sanders, Margie House, Myrtle Patsch, and Willie Frye.
Peggy is survived by her four sons, Rev. Samuel Phipps (Tami Phipps), Curtis Phipps, Dan Phipps, and Rev. Matthew Phipps (Dr. Christa Phipps); her grandchildren, Rev. Seth Phipps (Erika), C.J. Phipps (Amelia), Christian Calo (Ryan), Christopher Phipps (SaraLynn), Abigayle Phipps, Victoria Phipps, Margaret Bennett (Luke), Grayson Phipps, and Noel Phipps; and her great-grandchildren, Aubrey Mullis, Gibson Phipps, Eden Phipps, and Sage Phipps.
A visitation for Peggy will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm Monday, August 22, 2022, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Campus Worship Center, 7200 East W.T. Harris Boulevard, Charlotte, North Carolina 28215, with a service to celebrate her life following at 12:00 pm. Interment is private.
