Paul Joseph McDaniel, Jr. 69, passed away peacefully at Charlotte Memorial Medical Center in Pineville, NC on August 29th, 2019. “Joey” is survived by his wife, Joy Ann Taylor of Winston Salem, Dr. James Goodlett McDaniel of Jacksonville and Saint Augustine, FL; and one sister, Miriam Harper McDaniel of Wrightsville Beach, NC and Alexandria, VA. Paul is pre-deceased by his parent’s, Paul Joseph McDaniel, Sr. and Lucretia Thornton McDaniel of Wilmington, N.C.; and, a sister, Lucretia McDaniel Cardwell of Wilmington.
Paul graduated from New Hanover High School and attended N.C. State. He worked for many years in the automobile business. Later in life he decided he worked best as his own boss and decided to drive a truck. Joey loved to hunt, fish, and enjoyed Scuba diving. He had many friends and family members and was a bridge between those who may have drifted apart by circumstance or fear. Just before he was in the tunnel, I asked him how ‘"how's your spirit, my old friend? “Pretty good”, he said. "I'll beat this thing, one way or the other. You know how I know? Because I have already won the battle”.
Joey was an avid reader. He knew a great deal about the history of societal conflict. Joey was a deeply loyal friend, caring brother, and loving son. He knew how to “shuck and jive” with the best of them. He was also deeply spiritual and had a love for all living things as time passed. Joy Ann, his wife, worked to help Joey live a life of commitment and kindness. I am one of many who will mourn the loss of Paul, his kindness and grace, and, even his bossiness.
