Patricia Ann Montgomery slipped away peacefully on Sunday, June 05, 2022 after a long, brave fight. Pat is survived by her three children, Cathy, Andy, and Joe; and one granddaughter, Amanda Robbins. She always considered the people that loved her children as family too. Her two sons-in-law, Tommy Anthony and Ken Guhse, always had a special place in her heart. You could say that she really had four sons instead of just two.
Patsy Ann Edwards was born in Statesville, NC on June 15, 1939. She was always a bookworm and a rule follower. Patsy was smart as a whip. She was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by her graduating class at Central HS in 1957. That same year, Patsy married an US Air Force man. They moved to Charleston, SC and got right down to business. Patsy was the mother of two by the early 1960’s. Her third (and favorite) child, Joe, came along some time later to round out her brood.
Motherhood suited Pat very well. There was nothing more important to her than her children. While the military moved her family all over the world. Pat always worked hard at making a safe and happy home wherever they landed. She was a fun mom with a great laugh and a devilish sense of humor.
Mom always made the holidays extra special. Even in the sweltering tropical heat of Bangkok, Thailand, Mom still made it feel like Christmas. She was famous for her Christmas Eve “Variety Suppers”. This was mom-speak for a junk food extravaganza! Yes, mom was doing tapas before tapas was cool.
In 1977, Pat unexpectedly became a single parent. Without missing a beat, she picked up her family and moved them to her hometown of Charlotte, NC. Pat had learned to swim upstream quite early in life. So survival was in her blood. Mom worked three jobs for many years to keep her family afloat. There was never a time when one of her kids went without. Ever.
Mom was always our rock and our glue. It was her strength and resilience that carried her family through the many storms of life. She always led by example. But above all else, mom was someone who always kept her word. Pat Montgomery never let you down. We will miss you, mom.
A private service for the family will be held amongst the fall leaves of the NC mountains later this year. The mountains were always mom’s happy place. In lieu of flowers, please support Lydia’s Legacy, a Charlotte- based foundation that raises awareness of gynecological cancers through education and advocacy.
