Nancy Barton Waldrop, 94, formerly of the Derita Community, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 in Asheville. A daughter of the late Joseph Madison Barton and Lois Golightly Barton, she was born on October 11, 1917 in Inman, SC. Mrs. Waldrop was a graduate of Asheville Teachers College and was a member of Derita Baptist Church. She taught in the elementary grades of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System for 30 years and had lived in Charlotte for 45 years. Mrs. Waldrop loved cooking and providing for her family and those who became family, which were many.
At Mrs. Waldrop’s request, services will be private.
Mrs. Waldrop is survived by a daughter, Susan W. Slusser and husband Dale, of Asheville;
three sisters, Iris Barton, of Greer, SC, Angeline Ballenger, of Greer, SC, Mary Langley, of Greenville, SC; a daughter-in-law, Anne B. Waldrop, of Spartanburg, SC; a granddaughter, Daphne Dawson and husband Stephen, of Campobello, SC; a grandson, James D. Waldrop, of New Church, VA and a great-grandson, John Dawson, of Spartanburg, SC.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Waldrop; a son, John M. Waldrop, Jr. and a sister, Betty Jo Brown.
