Born in Ware Shoals, South Carolina, Mary (also known by many of her friends as Joyce) grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina and later moved to Charlotte in 1947. She graduated from Tech High School in 1951 – the same year she married her high school sweetheart, Dick Hooks.
Mary Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Dick) Hooks, and parents, J.C. and Sudie Burton.
She is survived by her children Donna Hooks, Ron Hooks, Charles Hooks, and Chris Hooks; daughter-in-laws Lenore Hooks, Julie Hooks, and Kristiann Hooks; grandchildren Brian Fowler and his wife Jenny Fowler, Brad Hooks, Sarah Prince and her husband Kevin Prince, Josh Hooks and his wife Jenna Hooks, Lindsey Olmos and her husband Jesus Olmos, Hannah Hooks Miller and her husband Seth Miller, Rachel Herndon and her husband Matthew Herndon; great-grandchildren: Max Miller, Nash & Mila Herndon, Jackson Olmos, Milena Olmos, Christopher & Alex Olmos, Mackenzie & Raelynn Prince, Brianna Connolly & Claire Wolfe; sister Doris Sanders of North Augusta, Georgia and nieces and nephews.
Mary Joyce enjoyed the Tech High Lunch Bunch and spending time with her friends on Frank Drive, Jay Emry Sunday School Class, The Kings and Queens, The Mary Martha Circle, and friends at Polo Club of Matthews. She was a member of Weddington United Methodist Church and formally a member of Spencer Memorial Church. She loved going on trips with the “Kings and Queens” of Weddington U.M.C.
Her family was so precious to her, and she loved them very much. She also loved her friends and neighbors who were all very dear to her.
Mary Joyce Hooks was truly an angel on earth. She was a faithful servant to the Lord. To know her was to love her. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.
