She was preceded in death in 1997 by her beloved husband of 50 years, John Tot Bayne. They made their home in Charlotte, NC and were blessed with three children; Terry, Pamela, and John Bayne. She was also blessed with grandchildren; Michelle Connolly, Carey Henry (Sean), Ashley Bayne, Jourdan Bayne and great-grandson, Torri Suriano, all in whom she took great pride and loved dearly. She leaves behind nieces and nephews who loved and respected her as the matriarch of the family. She was also preceded in death by her mother, father, and 7 siblings.
Mary loved God, her family and friends, and spending time at her second home at Litchfield Beach, SC. Relatives and friends were frequent visitors. She entertained at the dining table where conversation flowed, crosswords were solved, and card games were played. Just a glance away lay the Atlantic in all its changing beauty, framed by swaying palmettos …. Mary’s cherished place by the sea.
A natural beauty with a keen eye for style, Mary was a popular local model in the fashion world during the 1950s and 60s. In addition, she enjoyed golf, tennis, and playing bridge. Mary was a character. Both witty and wise, her eyes sparkled when she smiled. She was quite creative…. busy hands were often penning artsy sketches or catchy odes. A nature lover and avid correspondent, her letters included commentary on the wildlife outside her window. She loved birds, flowers, and the treasures left by the ocean’s tides.
To family and friends, she was an inspiration and a sounding board. The last of her siblings – perhaps the last of her kind – she led a long life of love and loveliness. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Without a doubt, ‘tis the end of an era.
The family is indebted to her loving caretakers over the years; Luba, Luda, Claudia and more recently, First Light Home Care of Greater Charlotte and Hospice & Palliative Care.
A private, family only Memorial Service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary’s name to:
