Martha (McCall) Sheldon

Martha McCall Sheldon passed away peacefully and gently at the Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Community in Easley, South Carolina (located west of Greenville) on the evening of Wednesday, March 31st at the age of 82. Both of her sons were there with her when she passed into God’s hands.

She is survived by her sons; Joseph Victor Sheldon, III and Wilson Scarborough Sheldon, and her sister; Claire McCall Niven. She was preceded in death by her husband; Joseph Victor Sheldon, Jr., her father; Wilson Scarborough McCall, and her mother; Miriam McNair McCall.

Martha, also known as “Ring” by her sister Claire, was born on May 8, 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was a proud graduate of Myers Park High School, Class of 1956, and later received an Associate’s Degree from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, fondly known as the “WC”. She and Joe were married in Charlotte in 1959, and he graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 1960.

Martha was a successful homemaker, and later became an Executive Secretary for the Nalco Chemical Company. She was active in a variety of church and civic activities, often serving as a volunteer wherever she was needed. She and Joe retired to Florida in 2000 and after Joe’s passing she relocated to Greenville, South Carolina where she lived independent with her little dog, Mr. Boo.

Martha was a loyal, loving, and lifelong friend to all who knew her. In her younger years she was an avid tennis player, and loved a good game of Bridge. She was instrumental in supporting her husband’s sales business, utilizing her wonderful administrative and people skills. She had a knack for making other people feel comfortable and right at home in talking with her—-whether it was about professional needs or personal challenges.

Martha was always well dressed, having the example of both her parents, as well as her beloved Aunt Margaret and Uncle Charlie who owned one of the most fashionable ladies dress shops in Florence, South Carolina. Martha was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. She gave her life to Jesus Christ at an early Billy Graham Crusade, and this faith was nurtured by Kanuga summer camps, youth group, and regular participation in the life of the Church. She was quietly devoted to prayer for her many friends and family members.

The rite of Christian burial is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th at 11am to be held graveside at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Reverend Paul Jagoe will officiate the ceremony.
