Mrs. Martha Ann Mayse Barnett Dunn, 74, of Matthews, passed away peacefully at her residence. A native of Rutherford County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late James Laxton and Mary Lucinda Towery Mayse. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, G. Neill Barnett. “Aunt Marsh” was a teacher in High Point, served as an Administrative Assistant for IBM, was a General Contractor and Co-Owner of Neill Barnett Builders, Inc., and was an Instructor for H&R Block. She retired from the Mecklenburg County Library System, where she served the public as a Librarian. Martha was a 1958 graduate of R-S Central High School and a 1962 graduate of Limestone College. A member of the Christian faith, Martha was an avid reader, a lover of sewing and knitting, enthralled by the beach and loved to fish. Martha saw beauty in everything. She loved flowers and working in her gardens to make life more beautiful. She loved music dearly. Most importantly, though, Martha loved her family dearly, especially her nieces and nephews.
“Aunt Marsh” is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Mayse Williamson and her husband Carl of Charlotte and Juanita Mayse Miller of Forest City, NC. Also surviving Martha is her niece Melissa Miller Heeg and husband Timothy of South Carolina, nephew Joseph Henry Miller, III of North Carolina, niece Anne Williamson Davis and husband James of South Carolina and niece Elizabeth Williamson Young of North Carolina. Also surviving are great-nieces and great-nephews, Christopher, Deborah, Eric, Kristen, Laurel, Gray and Zachary.
The family would like to express thanks for the kindness and care shown by Cheryl and all of the caregivers who gave special care to Aunt Marsh.
A Funeral Service celebrating the life of Martha will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon with the Rev. Buddy Pigg officiating in the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park. Martha’s family is hosting a reception for their family and friends immediately following the Service
In lieu of the customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions in memory of Martha be directed to Novant Hospice and Palliative Care, located at 200 Hawthorne Lane in Charlotte, North Carolina 28204.
