Born on May 3, 1942 to Morris Elmore King and Hattie Lou Allison, Joan graduated from high school and went on to work for Duke Power and Charlotte Mecklenburg School system.
After retirement, Joan moved to Myrtle Beach where she lived for almost fifteen years. She loved living at the beach where she met many new friends and loved being able to host her family when they came to visit. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband Bill Bates, parents Morris Elmore King and Hattie Lou Valentine King; sister Emma Calebro, brother Billy King, sister Barbara Hubbard, brother Johnnie King and Shirley Manus.
Joan is survived by her loving children Robin (Rocky) Crenshaw, Mike Smith, Jack (Carey) Smith and Tonya Honeycutt; precious grandchildren Tony Ellis, Cody Honeycutt, Brandy Turner, Jack Smith Jr, Joseph Smith, Sandra Smith, Josh Fischer and Kacie Britt.
Joan also leaves great grandchildren Nate, Skyler, Evelyn, Eli, Alexis, Blake, Little Jack, Alyssa, Abel, Haylee and Abby along with step grandchildren Daniel, Kayden, Brooklynn, Madyson, Diesel, Audri, Naomi, Zophie, Jayden, Marcus and Maci.
She will be missed by nieces and nephews Cindy, Rick, Reggie, Terry, Randy Calebro, Teresa, Renee, Lisa King, Paul, Jamie, Joanne Hubbard and Sandy King.
Visitation will start at 1pm on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. Funeral service will begin at 2pm with burial immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
After the service, a celebration of life will be hosted at the home of Robin and Rocky Crenshaw at 2101 Cotton Mill Court in Matthews where everyone is welcome.
