Lewis Zacharie Bailes Jr., son of Roberta Hoover Bailes and Lewis Zacharie Bailes, Sr. was born April 25th, 1931 in Pineville, NC. Everyone called him Lewis Jr. Pineville was his town. He played a great game of basketball in high school. As a child and young man, Lewis also loved visiting his aunts and uncles in the Zoar Road Area of Fort Mill. It was there that Lewis and his wife Peggy built their home in 1957.
After high school, Lewis Jr. worked with his Dad as a paint contractor, and he married the lovely Peggy LaFoy in 1950. He purchased from his Bailes Grandfather and Uncle the Pineville Pool Room, which had always been a barber shop combination billiard parlor, and a place to shower and shave for travelers riding the train. It became known as Bailes Recreation Center and Lewis Jr. and his sons were proud to own and operate this business for many years, and to "pass the basket" for friends in need.
Lewis Jr. was super intelligent, had a great sense of humor, was always ready to help someone for a good cause; admired honesty, and was a John Wayne type of guy. In the later years of his life, Bailes Recreation became a favorite place to drink coffee and visit with friends.
Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Peggy LaFoy Bailes; daughter, Sandra Bailes Masterman (Mike); and sons, Lewis Z. Bailes III (Michelle) and Thomas W Bailes (Torrie); sister-in-law, Vickie LaFoy Ernsberger, husband George, and family Sonny, Rodney, Michelle and Kris Ernsberger; grandchildren, Walter Douglas Bailes (Stacey), Zacharie Bailes, (Heather) Tyler Bailes (Kirsten), April Masternan Baker (Jeremy), Ashley Masterman Sawyer, (David); great-grandchildren, Cody Bailes, Zelyia Bailes, Justin Baker, Alyssa Baker, Maddox Sawyer and Emma Kate Sawyer.
