Lee Marx was born in New York City on March 11th, 1927, to Charles and Etta Goldberg. She was the youngest of three sisters. Growing up in the Bronx, she attended William Howard Taft High School, graduating in 1944. She continued her education at Hunter College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948.
On New Year’s Eve in 1945, Lee met Walter Marx, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. They married on June 18,1950, when Lee was 23 and Walter was 25. Walter, a Holocaust survivor, wrote about Lee in his memoir: “I wasn’t the most optimistic person I am today. But Lee’s influence made me more so each year. She was my confidant and friend, and I listened to few people except her. I was aware that she was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” This marked the beginning of a 74-year relationship that ended with Walter’s passing in 2019.
After their marriage, Lee and Walter worked in the family-owned business, B&G Lieberman. Lee served as the bookkeeper and continued in that role until last year. The couple initially lived in Queens before moving to Oceanside, NY, in 1961. In 1971, they relocated the family and the business to Charlotte, NC, to consolidate B&G Lieberman into a single location.
Lee was an avid tennis player, a passionate traveler, and enjoyed playing bridge. She successfully balanced her career with homemaking and raising a family. In her later years, she was a resident at The Cypress of Charlotte. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Stewart Center and at The Cypress. Special thanks to her nurses and caregivers: Allie, Rose, Janice, Nneka, Danielle, Lashawn, Latoria and Jeanette.
Lee is survived by her three sons: Peter (Sheryl) Marx, Robert (Janet) Marx, and Gene (Amy) Marx; and her grandchildren: Lauren (Joe) Lafferty, Jessica Marx, Stacy Marx, Lisa (Jesse) Cotherman, John (Tiffany) Altschul, Annie (Philip) Altschul-Cheney, Emily (Nadia) Marx, Olivia Marx, Andy, Julia and Sophie Marx. Five Great Grandchildren: Lily and Harry Lafferty, Eleanor and Leo Cotherman, and Annistyn Altschul. Lee also shared a special and close bond with her beloved niece, Marcia D’Alessandro.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn East Cemetery on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM. Lee will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Walter.
