Laura Christine Smith

Laura was born February 5, 1987 in Charlotte, NC. Laura had a rough time coming into this world, but that didn’t stop her from being happy and spreading joy to all that met her.

She is survived by her parents, Barbara Hanson Kovalev of Charlotte and Walter “Cal” Smith (Beverly) of Tryon, NC; brother, Brandon C. Smith (Taylor) of Charlotte; maternal grandmother, MaryAnn Hanson of Stanley, NC; aunts and uncles, James L. Hanson (Irish) of Las Vegas, Gary W. Smith (Jacki) of St. Augustine Beach, FL, Bonita McCracken (Robert) of Pickerington, OH, John Hanson of Conway, SC; and her loving cousins; as well as extended family Milo and Yanneth Rodriguez and family of Charlotte, NC.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Walter and Louise “Lou” Smith of Charlotte; maternal grandfather, James B. Hanson of Mount Holly, NC; and her aunt, Pamela Hanson of Stanley, NC.

How lucky and honored we are to have been given the precious gift of Laura Christine. Also known as Lulu by many. Some might see a burden, but it has always been a blessing. Laura was a happy, bubbly little lady. The social butterfly in any occasion. Laura loved people, particularly she loved children. She would rock to music and squeal with delight. She enjoyed new clothes and loved when she was told how cute she looked. Laura also was a flirt. She would whip her hair around, smile and giggle when she heard soft deep voices.

Laura had a great sense of humor, nothing was funnier to her than when she heard someone being scolded. Her sweet giggle always broke the tension.

Laura loved to eat, and made sure no one ate in front of her without sharing. She enjoyed being pampered and going for a ride. It was so easy to fall in love with Laura. She was loved by classrooms full of children when she attended school. Her presence was even a reward for a young student. These children called Laura “Princess”. Laura loved it all. Laura taught us all to appreciate the joy in all things. Laura taught us that we all have more in common than we do differences.

Laura loved her younger brother who was more like a big brother to her. She couldn’t wait for him to come to her when she heard his voice. Nothing made her happier than when he would pick her up, both in his arms and in his car.

As a family, we would like to extend our appreciation to the countless teachers, therapists, medical and agency staff for the love and care they provided Laura and our family over the years. Particularly, we are grateful for the amazing loving and selfless care givers, Milo and Yanneth, and in Gwen, including all of their family members. Laura was blessed with so much love and joy from these beautiful and generous people.

A message from Mom, I look forward to holding you in my arms again, hearing of your adventures in heaven. You are free now, without boundaries or limitations. Run and play, my sweet angel. Grandpa and Aunt Pam will show you the way. I love you with all of my heart.

A celebration of Laura's life will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte, North Carolina 28210. Her family will receive friends following the service.
