Katherine Mae Owens, Miss Kathy, 81, a life-long resident of Charlotte, NC, joined the arms of our loving God, October, 31, 2023. Katherine is survived by her children, Teresa Barnette and Anthony Owens, sister, Virgina (Ginger) McLamb and brother, James (Jimmy) Stewart, grand-children, Nicholas and Leland Connolly and Riley Barnette; 8 great-grandchildren. She is preceded by her oldest daughter Susan Connolly Pierce, and parents, Albert Edward and Dorothy Mae Stewart; siblings Albert Edward Jr. and Louise Stewart Pettus.
Katherine's God given gift and desire was to mentor and steer children to the Lord. She used her gift well over 39 years where she raised children in her Christian based childcare. The center, her dream, started as Miss Kathy’s. Later, the name was changed to KidZoo. Daily she instilled in each child the same love she had for Jesus.
Well over 1000 families were touched by her enduring love and admiration for the Lord. While in the hospital, children and families from the past 39 years came to her side with sweet prayers and memories. Many sang songs from their early KidZoo days. While even more recited her favorite Bible verse, John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Education and love were her top priorities. This made for the perfect environment for the children to excel. Katherine also had a deep love for animals, and she was able to weave them into the daily daycare activities. This introduced the children to a compassion for animals.
She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all the childcare families. A simple but beautiful graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, 1504 W. Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262. Rev. Beau Hamner will officiate.
