Joyce Nixon Rea, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 15, 2023. She was born in Lincoln County on November 14, 1933. Following the death of her husband, Lewis, she settled in Charlotte to raise her family.
Joyce cherished her family most of all and was happiest when they were all at her house and she was cooking for them. And boy, could she cook! When not caring for her children and family, her career was as a Registered Nurse. She graduated from Presbyterian School of Nursing in 1954, and was always proud of her alma mater.
Joyce worked various nursing jobs in between raising her two children. She retired from the Dermatologic Laser Center in 2004.
Joyce enjoyed her retirement years volunteering at St. Andrews United Methodist Church and spending time with her two granddaughters.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; parents, Jay and Ellen Nixon; and a brother, Bob Nixon. She is survived by her daughter, Robin (Mike Davis) of Charlotte; son, Dan (Beth) of Raleigh; granddaughters, Jessica McCullen (Christian) of Raleigh and Haley Rea of Salt Lake City; and great-granddaughter, Darcy McCullen of Raleigh. She is also survived by two sisters; a brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at 3 PM Saturday, September 23rd in the Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home – 10500 Park Road, Pineville. The family will receive friends at 2 PM, prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society and to Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
