Hawley was born in Bridgeport, CT, on May 27, 1930, to Franklin and Ruth Hawley. He was raised in Brookfield, CT, and attended elementary school there. He graduated from high school in Danbury, CT, in 1948, and received a degree from the University of Connecticut in 1952. Hawley served in the U.S. Army from December 1952 to November 1954, spending one year in Korea at the 25th Infantry Division Headquarters. He started a 40-year career in the aluminum manufacturing industry in 1954, serving in various capacities and retiring as Regional Sales Manager in 1995. After retiring, he spent 14 years working part-time as a plumbing contractor for Rea Brothers, Inc., and fully retired in 2005.
Affectionately referred to as “Papa,” Hawley was a family man who loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Blair Road United Methodist Church. Hawley’s strong will to live and unwavering faith in God carried him through more than 10 years of fighting against multiple myeloma.
Hawley is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy Hawley (Spearman); daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Joe Pogonowski; daughter, Tina and her husband, Steve McDaniel; son Jay and his wife, Barbara Hawley; daughter, Carla and her husband, Roy Covington III; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren: Amy, Travis, Jennifer, Natalie, Caitlin, John, Christopher, Jacob, Haiden, Bailey and Zoe. Hawley is also survived by his sister, Joan and her husband, George Booth. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Blair Road United Methodist Church: 9135 Blair Rd., Mint Hill, NC, 28227. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Charlotte or Blair Road United Methodist Church.
