Born March 5, 1937 in Union County, he was the son of the late Robert Glen Bass and Mary Motte Bass. Following graduation from Mineral Springs High School, Pete enlisted in the Navy and served two years abroad aboard the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Salem. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Pete furthered his education at Gaston College earning a technical certificate in HVAC. He spent most of his career at Singleton Heating and A/C.
Pete was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church where he served since 1963 in many capacities including Elder, Building and Grounds Committees as well as serving as a cook. His family fondly remembers his serving breakfast for the many church events like Room at the Inn, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The joy of Pete’s life was his family. He adored his wife, the former Mary Weddle, his high school sweetheart. They married in February 23,1957 and enjoyed 61 years of marriage. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. An avid fisherman, Pete spent many hours in the peace of fishing sometimes only catching water, which he would say was time well spent.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Weddle Bass; three children: Angela Bass Mitchell of Charlotte, Leigh Anne Hammer (Phil) of Midland, and Kevin Bass (Jessica) of Charlotte; and their three beloved grandchildren: Johnathan Mitchell, Katie Hammer and Jennifer Hammer; and their three great-grandchildren: Mila Mitchell, Sophya Mitchell, and Oliver Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Bass and Sarah Burnette.
A service to celebrate Pete’s life will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 19 at Christ Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends before the service beginning at 10:00 am in the Church Fellowship Hall. Private interment with military honors will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the nurses, staff and volunteers at Aldersgate for their excellent care and compassion during our time of need.
