Mrs. Carlin is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, Anthony Paul Carlin. She is survived by her four daughters; Cynthia and husband, George Wiley, grandsons, Keifer and Nolan; Brenda Carlin; Lisa Carlin; and Paula and husband, Tim Reilly, granddaughter, Jessica. She is also preceded in death by her mother, Madeline C Hayden, father, Frank Xavier Greenwell and sister, Alma Rose Barker.
Mrs. Carlin grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from Loretta Catholic High School. She moved to New York City with Eastern Airlines with aspirations to be a stewardess but along the way, met Tony, who on first meeting the young lady from Louisville, decided that “that’s my girl” and they were married in Louisville, Kentucky, the next year. They made many moves over the course of their marriage including New York, Kentucky, Ohio, and Florida. They retired to Leesburg, Florida, where she enjoyed many activities including ceramics, travel, canasta, and especially golf, achieving a “hole in one” at the Monarch Golf Course. She was also an accomplished bowler and a member of the “200 Pin Club” and bowled a perfect game! As the bowling secretary in the late 1980’s, she was a pioneer in the use of the new home computer and created a DOS based program to keep track of scores for the league. She also inherited her father’s carpentry skills and the house in Ohio was affectionately known as “The House Janet Built” as she was the general contractor on site daily and did much of the finishing work. But of her many talents, her greatest talent was sewing; an accomplished sewing instructor, she was well known and sought after for her craft for making beautiful clothes and home goods. She was active in her faith community at St Sebastian Catholic Church in Akron, Ohio, and contributed her time and talents to the Christ Child Society and led the effort to sew the commemorative stoles for the St Sebastian 60th Jubilee celebration. She was a strong independent woman who instilled these qualities in raising her four daughters. As the matriarch of the family, she had a strong religious faith, devoted wife and mother, led by example, a quick wit and was a force to be reckoned with even in her last days!
Janet and Tony relocated to Mint Hill, North Carolina in 2012 to be close to family in their senior years. They found a wonderful faith community and home in St. Luke Catholic Church. She will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to her husband and family.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care by Irene Robinson and Bonnie Phillips. They are angels on earth and have become second family.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 9:00 am until 10:00 am Saturday morning, October 20, 2018, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, with a memorial mass to follow at 11:00 am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 13700 Lawyers Road in Mint Hill. Interment in Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, will be held at a later date.
