Charlotte - Mr. James Alan Paul, Sr. (Jimmy) age 77, passed away on June 18, 2013 at Carolinas Specialty Hospital. He was born on May 30, 1936 in Louisville, KY, a son of the late Ann Weber and Gus Conrad Paul. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Paul Pringle.
Jimmy was a graduate of Sumter High School, where he excelled in football, baseball and basketball, and where he was voted an All-American. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. His Tarheel fanaticism began when he played on the Freshman Varsity Basketball team under Coach Buck Freeman and Coach Frank McGuire. Following graduation, he was in Officer Candidate School for the United States Marine Corps. in Quantico, VA.
Following his service in the Marines, he worked as an investment banker for many firms, including E.F. Hutton, where he was recognized as the top municipal bonds trader in the United States. He was an active member at Myers Park Baptist Church, where he was also a former basketball coach.
He is survived by his three sons, James Alan Paul, Jr.; Edwin Conrad Paul, (granddaughter Christina Paul); William Hannan Paul (Geraldine Stokes); daughter, Anne Paul Heard (Chuck), grandson Charles James Heard and granddaughter Allison Katherine Heard; and his former wife, Katherine Hannan Paul. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Sam Pringle; nieces, Linda Pringle Owings and Susie Pringle Ingle; and nephew, Chip Pringle.
A service in celebration of the life of James Paul will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013 at Myers Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Heaton Hall. Inurnment in the church columbarium will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Myers Park Baptist Church Sunshine Fund in memory of James Paul, Sr., 1900 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207.
