Jim served in the Navy and was a WWII combat veteran serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Gary before a long career in the food brokerage business. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a lifelong Shriner and member of the Red Fez Shrine Club, a Jester of Court 109. Jim was a faithful member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister Betty Stephens White. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Vy Heptig Stephens, his brother Ted Stephens, brother-in-law O.W. White, two sons Gary Stephens; Eric Stephens; daughter Sharon Stephens; three step-sons Bill Heptig; Ken Heptig; Rick Heptig; as well as two step-daughters Rosemary Locklear; Carol Dillon and many special grandkids and great-grandkids.
A mass of christian burial for James will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 1:15 PM to 2:30 PM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC 28210, followed by a reception from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM.
