“Garry”
Mr. Freeman, 89, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on August 19, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on November 8, 1921 in Kannapolis, NC, a son of the late Charles and Mary Mitchum Freeman; and beloved husband to the late Sara Morrison Black Freeman whom he married in 1948.
While at UNC-Chapel Hill, Garry taught Sunday School in addition to holding down two jobs, along with his class work. His college career was interrupted by WWII, where he served in the Navy piloting personnel landing craft in the Pacific Theatre. He went on to graduate from Chapel Hill and founded his public accounting firm, J. Garry Freeman, CPA, which he owned and operated up until the time of his death.
Mr. Freeman was a member of Belmont American Legion Post 144, Toastmasters Club, was
Past President of the local chapter of Kiwanis International, and served as Lt. Governor.
He is survived by his son, Michael D. Freeman and wife, Dolores, of Charlotte, daughter, Sandra F. Farrell and husband Al, of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and grandson, Spencer B. Hight, of Garner, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 22, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte, with the Reverend Dr. Charles Foushee officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Forest Lawn West Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday afternoon, August 21st, at the funeral home.
