Mrs. Helen Little Boyd McConnell died on May 28, 2011 at the age of 99. She was born in Charlotte on January 19, 1912 to the late Robert Thompson Boyd and Fanny Little Boyd, and preceded in death by her two younger brothers Robert, Jr. and Ernest Lamar.
She graduated from Central High School and Agnes Scott College with an AB degree in History. She worked in the Disbursement Accounting Offices of Southern Bell for four years before her marriage to Robert Price McConnell in 1938, who was then a Federal Bank examiner. They lived in Arlington and Richmond, VA until relocating to Danville, VA, where her husband was associated with American National Bank & Trust Company as Executive Vice President until his death in 1960.
After her husband’s death, Mrs. McConnell was employed by the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court until her retirement. She was a resident of Danville for a total of 48 years and was a member of First Presbyterian Church; in addition to being involved in various religious, education, civic, and cultural organizations. In 1989 she returned to Charlotte and made her home in Sharon Towers, the Presbyterian Home at Charlotte.
Survivors include sons, Robert Price McConnell, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Apple Valley, CA and Edward Boyd McConnell and his wife Susan of Charlotte; sisters-in-law Peggy T. Boyd of Scranton, PA and Irene L. Boyd of Columbia, SC; grandchildren Marcy McConnell Piersol and her husband Matthew of El Cerrito, CA, Ian Boyd McConnell and fiancée Megan Spencer of San Francisco, CA, Emily Nelson McConnell of Charlotte, one great-grandchild Gavin Piersol; cousin Mary Boyd Abernathy of Matthews; niece Shannon Boyd Oates of Fuquay-Varina, NC and nephew Ernest Lamar Boyd of Hartsville, SC.
The memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Friday, June 10, 2011 in the Sanctuary of Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Graveside services at Triplett Methodist Church Cemetery in Mooresville, NC will be private.
Memorials may be made to any charity of the donor's choosing. The family would like to thank the staff at Sharon Towers for their care and support.
