Gary graduated from Oak Hill High School (Dudley Shoals, NC) and Appalachian State University. Gary was a teacher and coach at Oak Hill High School and taught at Granite Falls High School before going into the insurance business for 36 years. He was Vice President and Co-Founder/Owner of Reid, Jones, McRorie, and Williams, Inc. from 1982 - 1996.
Gary was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a certified lay speaker, served as lay leader, delegate to the Western North Carolina Conference, volunteered on several mission trips, member of the Trinity Sunday School Class, and teacher for many years. God gave Gary the gift to teach and he willingly used that talent. Gary was a member of Pine Lake Country Club for many years and was an avid golfer. His other passion was reading. He had a great sense of humor and was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 64 years, Ann Reid; his son, Kevin Reid; and his brother, Kenneth Reid.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Mills, Kutyna Carl, and Kristi Fox (Michael); his six grandchildren, Reid Mills, Matthew Mills (Alysia), Brandon Tart, Shaphyn Carl, Brittain Tart, and MacKenzie Fox; his eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey Mills, Memphis Mills, Jackson Mills, Evan Mills, Owen Mills, Peyton Tart, Skylar Tart, and Riley Tart; his siblings, Wayne A. Reid (Brenda), Gail Reid, David Reid (Charlotte), and Emery Reid (Antha); and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC. A visitation will be held prior from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC. A reception will then be held at the church in Munday Hall.
