He passed away at 2:30am, April 27th, in a peaceful manner with family by his side. Per his wishes, we will have a viewing and service this week in NC with the details below. As always, Dad was more worried about others than himself and so per his wishes, we have requested two additional memorials in the fall of this year (around Aggie football season no doubt) to allow those who may find it difficult to make it to NC this week, to have time to congregate and celebrate his life in Texas.
Tom Nelson, Dad's close friend and fellow classmate at Texas A&M (Class of ‘63 same as Gary), will lead a memorial to spread some of Dad's ashes at Sully on A&M’s campus in College Station, Texas. This memorial will be similar to others from his Corp of Cadets Squadron 1 (Hustlin’ 1) like Vance McNeil, best man at his wedding to Barbara.
Dad's brother Joe and sisters Sandra and Joyce will be leading a similar memorial in Midland, Texas around the same time in the fall to spread his ashes with family and friends present. In both instances for this fall, we will be communicating those dates, locations and times to this email group.
Dad will have a viewing at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC on Friday, April 29th from 6pm to 8pm. We will have a memorial service at the same location on Saturday, April 30th at 2pm. We will follow with a brief reception at the Providence Café just down the street from 4-6pm on Saturday after the Memorial. The service will have full military honors.
Gary will be leaving a wonderful wife of 50 years, Barbara, two sons Timothy and David, a daughter Shayle, 10 grandchildren (Ashley, Jake, Josh, Sydni, Jackson, Julian, Harper, Laurel, Evan, and Gus) , 2 great- grandchildren (Sophie Kate and Paxton) and a close family friend he considered a son, Jeff. He will also be leaving a brother, Joe, two sisters Sandra and Joyce, many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He will be joining in heaven his younger brother and fellow Vietnam Veteran, Jerry Lynn who also passed away from cancer in 2007.
As most of you know, the "Colonel" was a devout Christian and Patriot and has asked that anyone wishing to make donations please do so with two considerations. As a Vietnam veteran himself and career military officer of over 24 years and then as a successful business man for over 25 years, Gary remained a staunch supporter or our country and especially those who sacrificed for all of us in their service. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you consider supporting veterans and their families through donations to www.fisherhouse.org. This wonderful non-profit supports wounded military veterans and their families in a similar fashion to the Ronald McDonald House. Please contact their website for more information and reference Colonel Gary Moss.
As a proud Class of ‘63 Texas A&M graduate with two legacies (Tim Class of '88, David Class of '93), and as another direct gift charitable option for your consideration, the family is setting up a scholarship in Gary’s honor at Texas A&M. Contributions can be sent to the A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840 with a designation to the Corps of Cadets in memory of Gary Moss '63.
Finally, our flowers are being provided by The Blossom Shop on Park and should you prefer to send flowers, please contact the florists directly at 704-376-3526 and reference Gary Moss.
