Frank Carlyle Newton, Jr., age 81, passed away peacefully in his home in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 13, 2024, after a relentless battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and family who remained close by his side in his final days.
Frank was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 1, 1942, to father, Frank C. Newton, Sr. (with whom Frank shared his birth date), and mother, Helen Hoyle Newton, both of Charlotte. At the time of his birth, his father served overseas in the United States Navy during WWII while his mother remained in Charlotte working in the U.S. Rubber Company Shell Plant, employed as a “Rosie the Riveter” for the U.S. war effort.
The first born of seven siblings, Frank grew up on the Morris Field Air Base (later named Charlotte Douglas International Airport) and on Greenleaf Avenue in the Third Ward of Charlotte. As the oldest child of several, Frank quickly learned a strong sense of responsibility and independence. He knew that if he wanted something, he would have to get it for himself.
While attending Harding High School in Charlotte, he met his lifelong sweetheart, Nancy Carol Elliott. Frank and Nancy married in 1959, and began their lives together in Charleston, South Carolina where Frank was stationed at the Charleston Air Force Base and served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.
Frank went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and then a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida.
Over the course of fifty years, Frank forged an impressive career in the civil aviation industry with his first post as finance manager for the Charlotte Douglas Municipal Airport in 1975. Frank later became an Attorney at Law, serving the City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and then, an airport real estate attorney for Eastern Airlines overseeing its property interests at numerous airports across the United States including, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, John Wayne Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Miami International Airport.
In 1982, Frank moved into the airport financial consulting field, becoming president of the international firm, Thompson Consultants International (TCI). In 1990, Frank, together with wife, Nancy, founded Newton & Associates, Inc., an airport financial and strategic business management consulting firm, achieving notable success for nearly 35 years. Frank and Nancy’s firm continues to serve its many airport clients including Frank’s home airport, Charlotte Douglas, where he made significant contributions to its growth and development over several decades.
In addition to his long and rewarding career, Frank enjoyed traveling the world with Nancy, and spending time with their family and friends. Frank also enjoyed reading, music, golf, swimming, boating, fishing, carpentry, playing guitar and piano, gun collecting and, of course, his dogs and horses.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Nancy Elliott; daughters, Tommie Newton James (Stephen) and Deborah Newton Zufall (Daryl) and son, Frank C. Newton, III (Lorraine). Frank is also survived by four grandchildren, Joshua Elliott James (Jennifer Himelick), Jesse Daniel James (Madelyn), Brooke Ashely Newton, Olivia Lee Newton;two great-grandchildren, Paxton Wilder James and Huxley Roan James; his brother, Nick Ogburn Newton (Betty, deceased); sisters, Barbara Newton Walker (Billy) and Becky Newton Allen (Luther).
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, Beth Newton Palmer (survived by husband, Claude) and brothers, Mark Newton, and Alan Newton (survived by wife, Judy).
To those who knew him, Frank was sharp minded, and had a great sense of humor and a loving heart. Frank was also an avid learner throughout his life, accumulating a wealth of knowledge that he was eager to share with all, far and wide. He was strong-willed and determined in his interests, and quick to assemble a willing posse to support his endeavors.
During his life, Frank carried himself with dignity and strength, and he had a passionate love for his wife, family, many friends, and his animals. He will be missed dearly by all that knew him.
