The service in honor of her life will be held at 11am on Monday, March 12, 2018 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 8600 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road, Huntersville, NC. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, after which family will receive friends with a reception in Parish Hall.
Mrs. Verdone is survived by her children, Elsya Verdone Stockin, Catherine Verdone Chamblee, George Frederick Verdone, Jr. (Rick) and James Gerard Verdone (Jim); and grandchildren, Emily Louise Stockin, Katherine Rebecca Stockin, Elizabeth Ellen Verdone, George Frederick Verdone III (Rook), William Taylor Verdone, Honora Anne Verdone and Abigail Verdone Chamblee.
Born July 28, 1920 to the late Joseph Bennett McCoy and the late Katherine Watt McCoy, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Frederick Verdone, Sr.
Like her mother and her grandmother, Mrs. Verdone attended university; earning her degree from Salem College. Following graduation, she taught school in Asheboro, NC, before moving to Washington, DC to work in the Signal Corps. After WWII, Mrs. Verdone joined the Red Cross and was stationed in South Korea, working at the officer’s club on the local army base, where she met her husband.
They were married after returning to the states, living in North Wilkesboro, NC before settling in Charlotte. The family are members of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Verdone was active in several women’s circles.
Mrs. Verdone loved summers in Montreat, NC and cherished time spent at her farm, where she raised cows (really pets). She lived her life with an infectious enthusiasm, quick wit and unforgettable humor.
Emily was an original. A woman of character. A woman with a mighty heart who loved deeply, and was loved in return. The product of a generation that valued personal responsibility, honor, faith and family, she had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel like they mattered, because to her, everyone did.
A very special thanks to the caregivers in the healthcare units of Sharon Towers for their true compassion, care and love for both Emily and her family.
Contributions may be made in her memory to Parish Memorial Fund, c/o St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 8600 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road, Huntersville, NC 28078 (704-399-5193).
