Doris Shull Allen

Mrs. Allen passed away just days after celebrating her 91st birthday on June 18, 2016. She was born on June 13, 1925 in Columbia, SC, daughter of the late Lawrence R. and Rae R. Shull of Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Allen graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School in Cayce, SC with perfect attendance. Upon graduation, this member of the greatest generation was employed at the Columbia Army Airbase during World War II. After the war she met and married the love of her life, Neil Withers Allen, when he returned to finish his degree at the University of South Carolina after serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Mrs. Allen was a life-long Gamecock sports fan. After her husband's death in 1978, Mrs. Allen rejoined the labor force and worked as an executive secretary at Central Piedmont Community College until her retirement. She had a contagious sense of humor, and her candy drawer was always full for family and friends. Mrs. Allen was an active member at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. She loved her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Doris Allen is survived by her two sons, Russell Neil Allen (wife Beverly) and Randall Withers Allen (wife Lynn), as well as her granddaughter, Meredith Allen Speas (husband Matt), and grandson, Chadwick Withers Allen. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Allen was also preceded in death by her brother, William Russell Shull and his wife Dorothy.

A service to honor her life, which touched so many, will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 1st at Harry & Bryant's "Chapel in the Oaks", 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with Reverend Bobby Morrow officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the service. The committal by the graveside will be held later that afternoon at 4 pm at Mount Tabor Church Cemetery, West Columbia, SC.
