She left this world with her daughter, Debbie, by her side. She had lived the last years at the Laurels and then the Haven of Pineville, N.C. Hospice of Charlotte made the final journey easier for both Donna and her family.
Born July 14, 1932 at home in Granville County N. C., Donna was delivered by her grandmother. Her parents were Erwin Yancey and Iola Grimm Yancey. She was their only child.
Following graduation in Oxford, NC, she attended at East Carolina Teacher’s College.
On February 14, 1953 she married Robert A. Leggett. Together they had three children; Deborah Wesslen of Charlotte, N.C., Robert Leggett (Amy) of Cary, N.C. and George Leggett (deceased).
After their marriage ended, Donna returned to ECU to finish her degree in Elementary Education and Master’s degree. She was a distinguished and a much loved teacher and administrator in various counties in N.C. and schools in Tehran, Iran and Brasilia, Brazil.
In 1972, she married Roy Colquitt and in 1976 they took positions at the Tehran American Schools in Iran. They got caught in the Iranian Revolution and made a dangerous and harrowing escape from Iran in January, 1979. They then took positions at the Escola de Brasilia in Brazil.
After their return to N. C., Donna continued to teach children in Union and Mecklenburg County until her retirement.
Donna and Roy divorced and remained close friends. She continued to spend her time playing bridge, being an active grandmother and loving on her fur babies.
She is survived by her daughter Deborah, son Robert (Amy), one grandson and 5 granddaughters and 3 great granddaughters.
A son George Leggett and grandson Staffan Wesslen preceded her in death.
A private burial will take place in Granville County at a later date.
