He was born in Charlotte, NC, where he lived and worked for most of her life.
A graveside service officiated by Mike Pittman with Amazing Grace Baptist Church will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC where he will be laid to rest with his late mother and father.
He was preceded in death by his father Jack Sherman Smith (d July 12, 1945), step-father Ernest Linley Moore “Pop” (d June 18, 1959), his brother Michael Winslow Smith, Sr. (d Oct. 6, 2009), his mother Ruby Cornelia Lowder-Smith-Moore (d January 21, 2011) and his sister Loretta Anne Smith-Lewis-Cook (d May 10, 2011).
He is survived by his younger sister, Nancy Simpson (Milton) of Monroe; his step-daughter, Renee Pittman (Mike); his step-grandchildren Shawn Pittman (Ashley) and Shannon Thomas (Josh); his great-great grandchildren, Jaylyn Thomas, Abel Thomas, Riley Pittman; his nieces and nephews Marcia Rushing, Denise Moore, Regina Lewis, Robin Crenshaw (Rocky), Michael W. Smith, Jr., Jack E. Smith, Sr. (Carrie), Tonya Honeycutt (Richard), Simone Smith, Devin Smith (Brittany), Heather Birmingham (Shea) and Christopher Simpson. He had numerous great-nieces and nephews, including one named for him Hunter Birmingham.
During his journey through life, he lost his father at the age of 9 in a truck accident in 1945; was at Union Mills Boarding School in the mountains; Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte; and foster home with Mr. & Mrs. Fred Johnson in Huntersville. In 1991 and 1992 he and his mother traveled in a pop-up trailer and visited 48 states. It was a trip both of them thoroughly enjoyed.
We would like to express our most heartfelt gratitude to the Brian's Nursing Home on Shamrock, East Towne Manor on Sharon Amity, Brian's Rehab on Redman and Novant Presbyterian Hospice staff for his care during the last days of his life.
