David Russell English

Charlotte - David R. English, 65, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born October 5, 1954 in Roanoke, VA to Ruth Anne Hendrix and James Russell English.

David lived in multiple East Coast and Northern California cities. He graduated from Loyola High School in Baltimore in 1972 and from Harvard University with a B.S in Botany. David was a competitive springboard diver from about the age of 9 through college. He was an All-American diver during high school and went on to letter as a diver at Harvard. After graduation, he coached high school diving in Cincinnati, OH.

David began his career in computers, starting with his father's computer business; then spent 25 years with Hewlett-Packard, earning appointment to the President's Club. David took early retirement in Dallas, where he resided twenty plus years with his husband, Scott W. Flippen who survives him. They were married April 3, 1988 in Cathedral City California Presbyterian Church. Together they lived in Cincinnati, OH, followed by San Francisco, CA until the earthquake of 1989. David and Scott relocated to Dallas followed by a year and a half in El Reno, OK, caring for Scott's father Bruce in his last days. They then moved to Charlotte in July of 2010 where they have remained. They reaffirmed their marriage November 11, 2014 at Myers Park Baptist Church.

David worked for Healthy Home Market health food store at the Galleria. Together David and Scott are members of Myers Park Baptist Church, David serving in the choir, Scott as a deacon. Their family includes two Jack Russell Terriers, Reuben and Opal, 14 and 12 respectively. David and Scott served as hosts for The Room at the Inn at Myers Park Baptist.

David is predeceased by his mother and father. In addition to his husband Scott, he is survived by brothers, Jimmy English (Charlene) of Missouri and Chris English (Susan) of Vermont; sisters, Daryl English (Barclay) of New Jersey and Vicki Vandermolen (Kurt) of Indiana; half-sister, Lindsay Baker (Aaron) of Apex, NC; and half-brother, Jay English (Jennifer) of Charlotte, NC; and step-mother, Beth English of Harrisburg, NC.

A service to celebrate David's life will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2020 in the sanctuary of Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service in Heaton Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of David may be made to ASPCA (aspca.org) or to a local animal shelter.
