Cpl Coy Albright Shue, 102, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his Hickory Grove home in Charlotte, NC, on October 31, 2023. Coy was a decorated veteran who served in World War II assigned to the 4th Marine Division and received the Purple Heart. Shue served in the battles of Iwo Jima, Saipan, Roi-Namur and Tinian. He is known by many “as a hero.”
Coy was born on September 24, 1921 in Charlotte, North Charlotte to his parents Ira and Maude Shue. He grew up in Charlotte in what is now known as NoDa. He started working at the cotton mill at the young age of 8. After his time in the war, Coy settled in his hometown of Charlotte where he owned and operated Shue's Auto Top & Trim. Coy married the love and light of his life Doris Mae Taylor Shue on April 25, 1947, staying happily married for 75 years until she passed away in March 2023. They enjoyed square dancing and traveling with the Model A club. Coy and Doris traveled to Hawaii twice, Alaska, The Panama Canal & Canada.
Coy is also survived by his sons, Ron A. Shue and Rob I. Shue; 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many "adopted" grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris May Taylor Shue and his daughter in law, Joy Graves Shue.
Coy was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and was very active in his church. He enjoyed preparing and serving Thursday morning Prayer breakfast for many years at Hickory Grove Methodist Church. He loved woodworking, gardening, model A cars, growing his grape vines, bluegrass music and spending time with his family. He credits his long life to loving God and lots of prayer and of course eating oatmeal everyday!

A Celebration of Life will be at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC. 28215 on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. Visitation will be at 10:00 am. with a memorial service at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park and all are invited to attend.
