Charles Robert Shaney

Charles (Bud) Robert Shaney, aged 96, left this earth to be with his Lord on December 3, 2024. He was the pure definition of a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who left a loving imprint in everyone’s heart who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Bud, as he was known by most, was born on August 21, 1928, in Asheville, NC. He spent his formative years in Mills River, NC, where he grew up milking cows and tending to chickens before going to school, hunting and fishing to help provide food for the family, and helping his mother work the garden. As the older of two sons, he stepped into the role of “man of the house” when his father was away for months at a time pitching with the Asheville Tourists. He attended Brevard Business School for two years, and was given a job offer before graduation, which he took. That began his lifelong career in the motor transportation industry. He retired from AG Boone Sales & Service in 1993, and during those decades of working he held many positions including Route Manager, Office Manager, General Manager, and a variety of other duties that just needed to be done.

Above any title he held at work, Bud would proudly say that his most important title was husband to his favorite girl, Pauline, father to his two daughters and grandfather/great grandfather to the next two generations. He was a hands-on father, taking turns with Pauline to care for their girls in the middle of the night when they were sick. He loved taking his daughters fishing, even though he spent most of his time getting knots out of their lines and getting their lures out of tree branches. In 1970, a new family vacation tradition began, a week at Ocean Isle Beach. The first year consisted of the original four family members, but as the family grew, the house got bigger, and on Bud and Pauline’s final trip in 2019, there were thirteen family members.

Bud had many interests, hobbies and talents. He was a true outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing at Lake Wylie, Santee, the Outer Banks, and other secret spots with his fishing buddies. He also had a set of hunting buddies and was still climbing into his deer stand well into his 80’s. One of his hunting highlights was the years he got to hunt on horseback for elk, mule deer and antelope in Montana. He also had a group of golfing buddies, and they spent as much time on the greens as they could. His proudest golfing moment was his hole-in-one on July 26, 1994, at the 12th hole at Tanglewood Country Club, 130 yards to the pin. As a member of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, he used his God given talents in many ways. He sang in their choir and the gospel men’s group, The Disciples. He served as Deacon, Elder, and finally earned the honor of Elder Emeritus. He served on the Worship Team for decades, made his world-famous spaghetti for Vacation Bible Schools, fried hushpuppies for the church Bar-B-Ques, and was always in the background as one of the unnoticed little “church mice.”

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline Shaney, his daughter, Rhonda Weaver (Lester), his granddaughters, Jessica Smith (Matt), Megan Stensvold (Henry), and Nanette Featherstone, and his great grandchildren Carson Smith, Hunter Stensvold, Whitney Smith, and Mason Stensvold.

Bud is preceded in death by his daughter, Pam New, and brother, Richard Shaney.

Memories of his sense of humor, loyalty, friendliness, generosity, and love will be cherished by all who knew him.

Services will be held at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church located at 9401 S. Tryon St in Charlotte on Saturday, December 14, 2024 with visitation at 10am and Celebration of Life beginning at 11am.

Burial with US Army Funeral Honors for family and friends immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
