Charles “Dick” R. Hughes passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at his daughter Lorraine’s home in Mint Hill, NC where he had resided since March 2020. Dick was born in Canton, Ohio on September 8, 1930 to the late Charles “Dewey” Hughes and Blanche (Peterson) Hughes Naetzel. Dick graduated from Lincoln High School and served in the US Army. He retired from RIZ-MAN Chemical in 2019 where he was employed for almost 50 years.
Dick loved sports, especially the Indians, Browns and Ohio State and rarely missed a game. He was a great conversationalist, very well-read and informed in most subjects. He loved vacationing with his family in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Oregon and enjoyed annual visits with his daughters. Dick had considerable health issues for many years but lived his life with optimism, courage and resilience and was grateful for every day and never complained. He was truly an inspiration to all. He was a real character, overcame many obstacles and lived a colorful life filled with many friends who will miss him very much. We all will miss him and his love so much and also miss the stories – all the stories! - his twinkling eyes and the wonderful man behind them.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, former wives Mary and Gail, his beloved sister Ruth Halter Popiel and several stepchildren. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughters Loretta Koenig and Lorraine (Steve) Rankin, nieces Susanne and Carole, grandchildren Rusty, Keith, Eric and Jaimie, six great-grandchildren, stepdaughters Verna and Mary Kay and several step-grandchildren.
