She was born April 4, 1941 to Velma Virginia Talbert and Floyd David Mason. She was a graduate of Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1962. Carolyn was a retired Registered Nurse who spent most of her career employed at Presbyterian Hospital-Same Day Surgery, where she worked as a recovery room nurse.
Carolyn’s passion in life was taking care of others. It was evident in her love of nursing, her chosen career, as well as her many days and nights spent caring for many friends and family as they experienced medical issues. She was always ready and available to help those who needed her expertise and assistance.
Carolyn had a great love of travel, most of which was done after her retirement in the past five years. She traveled to many different places with the many friends she made throughout the years.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother, Velma Mason; father, Floyd Mason; step-mother, Vergie Mason; her first husband, Clark B. Holt; and second husband, Richard “Dick” W. Miller, Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Linda Russell, and brother-in-law, Bob Miller. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Cindy Hicks (Scott) and their children Jordan and Brad of Marvin, NC; son, Jon Holt of Myrtle Beach, SC; step-son Bill Miller (Lynn) and their children Richard, Sean, and Brianna of Damon, Tx; step-son Brad Miller (Linda) and their children Lacey, Austin, and Danny of Dover, PA; step-daughter Cindy Birgensmith (Brice) and their children Brandon, Jared, and Alexa of Dover, PA; and two great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Luz Marina Miller and nieces Nancy McLendon, Lindy LeBel and Jimmie Workman and their families.
Carolyn was loved by many friends in Concord, NC and Charlotte. She was a resident of Sun City Carolina Lakes and enjoyed many activities with her friends and neighbors.
The family would like to thank the nurses and personnel of Novant-Presbyterian Hospital-Matthews for the wonderful care she received while in the hospital. The family would also like to thank Dr. James Boyd and all the employees at Oncology Specialists for their care during the past ten months. A very special thanks to her wonderful caregivers Jeannette Collins, Lisa Aragona, and Olga Cuevas.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Weddington United Methodist Church in Weddington, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross-Greater Carolinas Chapter, 2425 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203 or to the Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center, 242 S. Colonial Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28207.
