Carl was born on February 3, 1946 in Wilson, NC to the late Jean Hamm (née Wolfe) and Carl Hamm Sr. After the family relocated to the Charlotte area when Carl was a toddler, he went on to attend city schools, and graduated from West Mecklenburg High School with the class of 1964. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing baseball and running track.
Carl married his high school sweetheart, and the only woman he ever loved, in June of 1966 at what is now known as Shady Brook Baptist Church.
Carl was a truck driver for A.G. Boone for 30 years and a bus driver for the Charlotte Douglas International Airport for 13 years. His experience working in these industries naturally led to his involvement with the Local 71 Teamsters Union, and he was the proud recipient of the One Million Mile Safe Driving Award.
In his down time, Carl enjoyed mowing the grass, even mowing his neighbors’ yards from time to time. He liked his cigarettes, the occasional beer, and country music, and was a fan of NASCAR racing and golf cart rides. He also enjoyed talking on his CB radio, which took him back to his truck driving days.
Carl loved his wife and three kids more than anything, and delighted in bringing them back gifts from his road trips. As a family, they took vacations to Myrtle Beach every year where he’d get the best tan and teach his kids how to fish from the pier.
Those left to honor Carl’s memory include his beloved wife of over 56 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” Hamm; children, Carla Hamm, David Hamm (Traci), and Todd Hamm (Crystal); grandchildren, Holly Bautista (Felix), Tyler Hamm, Brandon Blair, Savannah Morgan (Alex), Chad Hamm, and Marisa Hamm; great-grandchildren, Bailey Bautista and Zeppelin Morgan; and siblings, Dennis Hamm (Nancy), Jan Futrelle (Dunc), and Randy Hamm (Jay); as well as numerous other loving relatives and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Carl Hamm; and his brother, Bobby Hamm.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00am until 11:00am on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte.
