Beverly “Bev” Ewing passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023 in Charlotte in the care of loving family, friends and care givers.
Born in Akron, she was a graduate of Kenmore High School and the University of Akron where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education. She received her Master’s Degree from St. Francis College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
She was a member of Montrose Zion United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and national, local, and state teacher associations. Beverly was a Business Teacher for 38 years—Garfield High School in Akron, Fort Wayne Local Schools in Indiana, and Highland High School in Medina County where she taught for 30 years.
Beverly will be remembered as a lady of generosity and kindness who loved teaching and working with young people. Her charm, charisma, and dedication to life-long learning were her outstanding attributes, which will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was a strong teacher, knew her subject matter well, and had an excellent business-experience background having worked part-time at Acme, Firestone, Rainbow, Inc. and various law offices.
Beverly instilled a love of learning and desire for all around her to achieve a better life through education. She will also be remembered for her always cheerful personality, story-telling, singing and loving to be the center of attention.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband James Morris Ewing; her father and mother, Albert Jeremiah and Laura Utke Gates; baby sister, Henrietta Gates; sister, Mrs. Harry (Rainy) Stitzlein; and brother, Albert (Shirley) Gates.
She is survived by her two children, David Charles Ewing of Dallas, Texas; Lorraine (Susan) Ewing and her husband, Marc Heighton and their two children: Alexis Heighton Mueller and her husband (George) Max Mueller, and Karenna Heighton of Charlotte, North Carolina. Also surviving Beverly is her brother, Charles Franklin Gates of Akron, Ohio and her many nieces and nephews.
Beverly took great pride in her two granddaughters, Alexis and Karenna, spending all her spring breaks, summers and holidays with them as well as spending her last years in Charlotte and will cherish them especially forever.

A service to celebrate Beverly’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 10th in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service – Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. The family will receive friends following the service.
