Mrs. Shuford, a resident at Aldersgate Retirement Center, died on April 17, 2017. Born in 1920 in Brunswick, GA., she was the daughter of the late R.K. and Sue Walker. The family moved to Charlotte, N.C. in 1932. Betty graduated from Central High School in 1938 and was the class poet. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Women’s College (known now as UNC-G). In 1943, she married Paul. H. Shuford of Lincolnton and was a stay-at-home mom for their four daughters until 1965, when she became the media -specialist- librarian at Hickory Grove Elementary School, until she retired in 1982. Following retirement, Betty was a Presbyterian Hospital volunteer and was the "story lady" at Alexander's Children Center. She also taught creative writing lessons. When she was 89 years old, the family published a book of her short stories. She was famous for writing her special poems for friends and family. She attended Plaza Presbyterian Church and was awarded a lifetime membership by the women of the church. She was an Elder and taught Sunday School for years and was a teacher for her Bible circle group. She played in the handbell choir and was very active in the Plaza Players performances.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; sister, Suzanne; and grandson, Jeremy. She is survived by daughters, Pam Edwards (John), Sandy Spratt, Martha Mason (Kent) and Alison McCall (Hugh). Also surviving are nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; nephews, Doug and Brad Glenn, Ford Smith and Alex Shuford; and nieces, Barbara Jones and Carolyn Tupper.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, April 29th at Plaza Presbyterian church with Rev. Tom Tate officiating. A reception and visitation will follow the service.
