Betty Bradley passed away June 21, 2021 after enjoying a fruitful 91 years. As an only child, she enjoyed her friendships as many would enjoy close family members. This affection was returned to her often. In several careers, she always enjoyed sharing her wit and sense of humor. After college, she traveled recruiting for Montreat Anderson College. On one of those trips, she met her future husband while staying at the motel owned by his parents. At the Gaston County Department of Social Services, she began as a Social Worker and progressed to be the Director of Eligibility. Later, as the long-time owner of the Bradley Motel, Betty interacted with thousands of guests and understood how to extend hospitality. She treated her guests like family members.
Betty’s faith and religious life were extremely important to her. She was an Elder and a Sunday school teacher. At one point, her Sunday school class numbered 45 couples. When she was unable to physically attend church, she worshipped with First Presbyterian on television. After four years, she decided to join. She was made to feel welcome by her Pastors, her Circle, and her Prayer Group. Betty enjoyed exceptional healthcare from the physicians and staff at Novant. Novant Hospice provided her and the family with many blessings. For many years, Betty was blessed with outstanding neighbors and friends on Sam Wilson Road. As she faced health challenges, her friends at the West Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Department provided continuous support.
Betty set high standards for her sons. She valued everyone’s contribution and challenged her sons to never feel that they were more important than anyone else. She drove many miles to attend concerts and faithfully attended ball games. Her enthusiasm in the bleachers could often be heard in center field.
Among Betty’s hobbies was the enjoyment of antique cars. She valued her membership in the Hornets Nest Region, AACA, and especially her old car friends. She thoroughly enjoyed working at the AutoFair event.
The family appreciates the support of her close group of friends. Lynn, Carol, Nancy, Kathy, Cindy, Sarah, Betty, Peggy, and Amanda brought true joy to Betty’s life. Most recently, they celebrated her 91st birthday in grand fashion. Jane Holt was her sister for almost eighty years and Marie and Nella have been the daughters she never had.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, and is survived by her sons, Paul and Carter, her daughter-in-law, Linda, and her grandchildren, Mike, Sam, and Sarah.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at the Forest Lawn West Chapel at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 17, 2021. The service will be officiated by the Reverend Pen Peery, her friend and the Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Her son Carter will provide the music. Beginning at 6:00 PM that evening, a reception and cook out will be held at the Bradley home to honor Betty. Her favorite food with extra onions and her favorite beverages will be served.
